Work Parties may be starting again soon

Throughout lockdown, the Friends of Handforth Station have been unable to do more than the most basic vital work at the station. We have not been allowed to gather for events like Work Parties, we have not been able to tend our vegetation/plantings as much as we’d have liked, and we have not been able to involve local community groups like the Scouts.

As circumstances related to COVID-19 change, Government advice means that the guidelines imposed by Northern Trains on volunteer groups such as ours are easing.

Handforth Station – A Platform for Art – Invitation to Artists

We’re still very hopeful that Network Rail will be installing our new lifts at the station in 2022; if government restrictions on building works permit then the lifts may even be in place by the end of 2021.

We are inviting proposals for further artwork to complement the installation of the lifts.

We are inviting artists to identify possible artistic enhancements to the new building works and then design them. As well as the lifts themselves, pathways, fences, seats, signage and other associated works also provide scope for inclusion in the design process.

We would love local (and not so local !) artists to read the announced brief and submit proposals for working with FoHS, Network Rail and Northern Trains.

A vintage Running In board installed at Handforth Station

On Saturday 19th October 2019, Handforth Station was the venue for the unveiling of a newly-installed 1950s era Running In board – a large sign showing the name of the railway station. Such signs are intended to inform passengers of their location when aboard a train entering the station, possibly while still moving at speed.

This piece of railway history was bought at auction by the Connolly family, who have kindly agreed to loan it to the Friends of Handforth Station (FoHS) for display at its station of origin.
