Manchester’s Urban Poet to lead another “Ged’s Guided Walk”

Ged Austin, known in Manchester as “The Urban Poet”, will be running another of his Guided Walks from Handforth Station, starting 10:30 on Sunday 3rd July.

Organised by the Friends of Handforth Station, these walks are typically gentle strolls over a 3- to 5-mile distance with plenty of stops, and they can take 3 to 4 hours.

Ged has designed Sunday’s walk to start and end at Handforth Station. It will be a “timeline walk” exploring the history of the area, and featuring Ged’s poems and some stories about the area, to which all are welcome to contribute.

FoHS recognised for promoting rail

Cheshire is unique. It is the only county in England that has a Best Kept Station Competition.

The Friends of Handforth Station are proud to have won an award in every year bar one, since the Cheshire Best Kept Stations competition started in 2003. This run of success at Handforth continues: at the CBKS awards evening in Northwich on Fri 1st April, we were presented with the “Promoting Rail” award, sponsored by CrossCountry rail.

The award from CBKS acknowledged several pieces of work that FoHS did in 2021, including displaying videos on our own website, working on rail publicity with Handforth Town Council, running a Covid-safe quiz about Handforth Station, and hosting visits to our station from groups for the disadvantaged.

FoHS are delighted to have been recognised for our efforts, and we are proud to mount this plaque inside Handforth Station’s ticket office, for all to see.

FoHS Open Meeting 5th April 2022

The Friends of Handforth Station invite you to join us at our Open Meeting, on Tuesday 5th April, held in Handforth Community Centre, Old Road, Handforth, SK9 3AB.

Everyone is invited to attend, to hear what we do for the station, and to contribute if you want !

Guest Speaker: Dave Carlisle (Outstanding Volunteer Contribution of 2021), who is the Chair of Friends of Buxton Station (The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2021).

All new attendees will be entered into a Prize Draw for a complimentary Northern Trains Rail Pass.

Please arrive after 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start.
